How to Help Anxiety in Children?

Anxiety is not a disorder limited to the adult population contrary to popular belief. As children too are feeling the effects of stress in their lives anxiety in children is rapidly increasing.

An individual's entire life can be deeply affected by events of childhood. To nip it in the bud before it takes over their child's personality it is mandatory for every parent to recognize the anxiety in their children.

Psychological Interventions

Special attention should always be given to anxiety in children. A trained medical professional is the best to achieve this. The first line of treatment by many doctors is considered individual psychotherapy. To give the child the confidence they need this is important and to assure them that they are not a failure. To reassure the child that they are not alone group psychotherapy is also considered and there are other children facing similar problems.

Parents should also be given guidance sessions along with the affected child which helps them continue the management of their children's anxiety at home. The child's entire environment should be compassionate and encouraging so often the entire family is involved. In situations where the school is the cause of the anxiety the school based counseling is preferred.

It is good for parents and teachers to have an understanding of the emotional background for the anxiety in children. To remain extra calm and patient they should put in an effort. Plan ahead of time for any situation which triggers anxiety in children in order to manage the situation in the best way possible. A key strategy to combating anxiety in children is encouragement and praise of the child. For children whose anxiety is due to school phobias special care should be taken. For these children teachers should cooperate and allow extra time for late arrival or slow responses to work.

Biological Interventions

There is a long list of drugs available for the management of anxiety in children. Antidepressants is the most common used line of drugs. It should be remembered that two to four weeks of drug use is needed before results appear and you should monitor continually for side effects.

Home and environment help is an essential part of management though certain cases can only be helped with the use of drugs and it is only when these two things go together that the child can be totally free from the anxiety which is ruining their life.
