Finding the Causes of Anxiety
One of the natural emotions of an individual is being anxious. Everyone is anxious about something whether it is a particular test result, an office presentation or their own wedding. When this anxiety gets out of control and interferes with a person's daily life then the matter should be considered more closely.
Usually there is a variety of factors to the cause of anxiety. Usually people feel like they can't take it anymore when they feel that several things are attacking them all at once. A typical situation is that of a high school teacher who has a demanding schedule and unruly kids at work, then at home he has a complaining wife and crying kids, then in his mind he has to worry about due bills and mortgage payments.
Probing into the Patients Recent and Remote Past
The biggest help to diagnose the actual cause of anxiety is the patient themselves in all cases. The patient will be asked to keep a detailed journal about their symptoms and the events leading to them by a psychiatrist. Before the start of the anxiety the patient is asked to jot down their thoughts and where they were when it happened. By reviewing these log books and noting the most common trigger to anxiety the cause of anxiety attacks can be determined.
Also help figuring out the cause of anxiety can be done by a detailed history of the patient's childhood and adolescence. A person can be scared for life by traumatic events in one's childhood. An individual can fear doctors and hospitals forever if the deal of a loved one occurs in a hospital. A life long phobia of dogs can come from a dog bite in a person's childhood. Typically until these feelings are brought out by probing into a patient's past they are usually unaware of their feelings.
Desensitization Process
The most important aspect of combating anxiety is determining the cause of anxiety. After the root of the problem is discovered then the problem can be tackled step by step. To help the patient overcome their fears over time gradual desensitization can be used.
A doctor will help a patient that is scared of drowning in water by exposing them to different levels of water starting with a bath tub and ending at the beach. This requires a lot of time and patience but usually helps overcome the fear completely.
The battle is half won once the cause of anxiety is figured out and the management can continue by focusing on the actual problem.
