Treating Stress and Anxiety
Stress is an Emotional Problem While Anxiety is a Psychiatric One
A situation or thought that makes a person frustrated, angry or anxious may give rise to stress and what is stressful to one person may not be stressful to another. On the other hand, when a person feels apprehensive or fearful it is anxiety and the source of this uneasiness may not always be known or recognized and so contributes further to the distress felt by the patient. Therefore, stress and anxiety are caused and treated differently and they are not one and the same. A person can feel excessive anxiety with anxiety disorders which is an aggregate of psychiatric conditions.
On the other hand, emotional instability such as too much grief and depressive thoughts may cause stress as well as overactive thyroids, low blood sugar or even heart attacks. No matter what the cause, both stress and anxiety should be properly addressed and finding the source should be paramount in the minds of those who are treating such disorders as stress or anxiety. Sometimes this isn't possible, but a person can make a small beginning by charting out the things that a person believes is causing the stress.
Once the possible source has been identified then a person should find a trustworthy individual to pour out their feelings and thoughts to. Many times relieving the stress and anxiety can be helped by talking about such matters and there are often communities that have support groups and hotlines to help out. A healthy life and a balance diet without overeating helps as well. It cannot be overemphasized the need for getting enough sleep and exercising regularly to help alleviate stress and anxiety. Little alcohol and caffeine should be used and never nicotine, cocaine or any other recreational drug.
A person should immediately call 911 if they feel a crushing chest pain accompanied with shortness of breath, dizziness or sweating. If you have thoughts of committing suicide or bouts of dizziness, quickened breathing or a heartbeat that begins to race then you should go to a doctor at once. If an individual is unable to work or function normally or they know the source of feeling stress and anxiety then they should get in touch with a health care provider.
