August 24th, 2007
Scientist is of opinion that social anxiety is the third biggest psychological problem in the world today.
Generally people suffering from the social phobia will be very self-conscious about themselves when they happen to be among other people or a group. They have this strange feeling that other is watching them constantly.
“Most of all they think that everyone is passing on negative comments on them or is talking ill of their appearance.“
Meeting their higher officials, boss, teacher or an interviewer is something dreaded by these people and they carry their fear wherever they go. Unlike other types of anxiety, depression etc that is only time bound or can be treated and cured, this social phobia is a life long phenomenon. The person has to live with this disorder all through his life.
Physical symptoms for the social phobia also includes
Blushing
Trembling
Heart palpitations
Undiagnosed pain
How can social phobia be treated? This can be cured or corrected through cognitive behavioral therapy and psychotherapy. Depending on the severity this treatment is given to patients suffering from this disorder.
Proper thinking patterns and the reaction or attitude towards situations that causes anxiety is all taught to help overcome this phobia.
Proper treatment can bring about a great change in the life and attitude of someone suffering from this phobia. These people can be successful if they followed the cognitive therapy without fail. Behavioral therapy and counseling along with group communal therapy has proved to minimize the social phobia.
During the therapy medicines are also included and slowly the patient is introduced to social groups to overcome and experiment the behavioral pattern taught during the therapy sessions. Though the causes cannot pinpoint by the scientist, they are of opinion that it might be caused through genetic and family factors. Social influences can also be a reason for a person incurring social phobia.
Whatever be the cause of the patients should accept their ailment and freely talk about it to a person whom they trust and love. Family members and colleagues should accept and understand his or her problem and try to make them comfortable.
