Types and Causes of Children's Anxiety

A person can be left feeling alone and helpless when the disorder of anxiety takes over their life. The situation becomes worse when the disorder effects a child since they are not able to distinguish fears that can be overcome.

The typical anxiety syndrome symptoms are present with children's anxiety symptoms. Often a child will feel like their head is spinning and that their hear is racing. They may also have a lump in their throat and stomach aches. There are different ways in which children react to these symptoms. It is more difficult for children to express their feelings the younger they are and all they can do is cry. They throw tantrums as they grow older and make excuses to avoid the stressor by going into a stage of silent mutism.

An In-depth Look Into the Different Aspects of Children's Anxiety

Separation anxiety is one of the earliest types of children's anxiety. Typically children between the ages of eighteen months and three years have this. Typically they have problems sleeping in their own room and are often seen clinging to their mothers. When the child reaches school going age the parents should expect a tussle and should tackle the problem before the stage arrives.

In pre-school and grade school social anxiety disorders will affect children. When children refuse to go to school in fear of the social interactions it is a sort of separation anxiety. Typically this form of children's anxiety is more focused such as being afraid of recess, the bus or the cafeteria. Before any interventions proper evaluation should be done since the root of the anxiety is often a specific teacher or class bully.

Various aspects of the child's life are involved in general anxiety disorders. At the ages of seven to eleven years this disorder peaks. Typically the child will excessively worry about some thing that is often trivial to others. Sometimes a child will be pre-occupied with something such as their looks, sports, punctuality or cleanliness.

Children of any age may be affected by specific phobias. When they are young children are afraid of something or another, but if a phobia lasts more than six months and the child's daily routine is affected then it should be given utmost importance.

For tackling children's anxiety medications should be the last resort. Children can overcome this condition and can live the happy and carefree life they are entitled to with proper counseling and cooperation at home and school.
