Clinical Depression: Causes, Symptoms, Types and Treatment

Depression is the rising problem. It is rising by leaps and bounds. The problems like stress and tension have become too common. These mainly lead to anxiety and depression. It is very common for a person to have depression these days. The cut- throat competition and the rising expectations both at work place and family have led the person to go out of capacity and this leads to low productivity and the result is depression. But depression is very dangerous as this leads chronic problems like diabetes, heart trouble etc.

Depression is the alarm for you to get cautious at the earlier stage itself. If the problem persists for as long as six months or so, it is referred as clinical depression. Depressed mood is a normal consequence of any disturbing event in life ranging in effect from losing a chess game to the death of a loved one. Such depression heals naturally without any treatment in some time, say from a few days to a few months. But in absence of any such event, If the depression persists for as long as six month, or more, it is called clinic depression and needs professional treatment. You must make it a point to visit a doctor. You need help.

There are three main types of clinical depression:

  • Unipolar
  • Bipolar
  • Dysthymia

Unipolar depression is the major type. And as the name suggests it is also supposed to be major in nature. This situation remains for many months. You have to go to a psychologist in order to get rid of this. It also takes sometime to get okay.

Bipolar depressive disorder is also called manic-depressive disorder. In these cases, patients experience severe depression alternating with episodes of mania (intensely happy mood).

Dysthymia is the mild form of depression characterized by long periods of sadness and pessimism. You simply feel hopeless. You may also suffer from insomnia. You have a lot of tension and sleepless nights. You feel worthless and simply of no use. When you or your loved one fall in the clutches of any of the types of clinical depression, you have to take professional help.

The symptoms of depression are really very difficult to understand. This is because you will never come to know if you do not remain patient and attentive. The depressed person will never ask for help. Whether of any type, depression has some common symptoms experienced by all patients. These include feelings of sadness, Hopelessness, sleepless nights, worthlessness, high degree of irritability and overreaction to some situations. You feel that you are not worth living in this world and do not want to go out and socialize. You may also bring down the productivity at work. There is complete lack of motivation. There is constant feeling of fatigue and you feel that you will always fail, and the person may even start stammering. There are many such symptoms. You must concentrate to find some awkwardness in the behavior.

Clinical depression prevails among an estimated 12 per cent of population. It is reported in all ages, races, and both genders. However, bipolar disorder is more common among women than among men. This is because bipolar depression is mainly because of hormonal change and genes.

The causes of clinical depression, differs and depends. A major known physiological cause of depression is the insufficient quantity or inactivity of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Another neurotransmitter, norepinephrine, also plays an important part in relieving depression. Evidence reveals that depression may be genetic. The subgenual prefrontal cortex of brain has been found smaller in patients having a family history of depression. Addiction to drugs and alcohol is also held responsible for depression. If there is some sad incident that happens then the person may undergo depression. Of course the environment also play a key role. And all these causes are significantly influenced by social/environmental factors like painful childhood experiences, traumas, and one's belief system etc.

To properly diagnose the condition, one must consult a physician for relevant tests.
