Well, depression is not a disease, but it definitely makes you ill mentally. This problem is rightly said to be a silent killer, because it moves swiftly and almost without any immediate symptoms. The person undergoes a lot of mental torture and due to this the friends and the family of the person also have to suffer. The effects are heart threatening. It may even cause death. Yes, all of a sudden the person affected commits suicide and a valuable life is lost. There may be many things going on in the person's mind and you will not even have a clue about any such thing. You may lose your loved one who may be in the clutches of depression.
Do you know depression can be categorized depending upon the type of depression? Bipolar depression, which is also known as manic depression, is a psychiatric condition that may best be described to specify a class of mood disorders wherein a person feels clinical depression as well as mania, hypomania and also mixed states. It is a critical stage. It creates many problems for a person suffering. It affects the patient as well as those close to the patient. There are two types of bipolar depression and these are Bipolar I and Bipolar II and, if these conditions are not treated, they can be extremely dangerous conditions. The person suffering may commit suicide. This is very common. If the person does not die there may be some permanent disability.
There is a fundamental difference between bipolar depression and unipolar depression. There are mood swings in case of bipolar depression. The person is constantly feeling a lot many moods. When moods change from one state to another it is known as cycling and these mood changes may impair or improve functioning, which is dependent on how severe the attack is. The intensity and severity depends and differs from one person to another.
Sadness, anxiety, guilt, and hopelessness, sleeplessness, lack of appetite, fatigue, disinterest etc are some of the parts that come in case of bipolar depression. The person becomes very negative. The person loses his interest in daily activities. His productivity of work at job is reduced and at home also he feels restless. The person with bipolar depression would also not be able to concentrate and feels irritable and there may also be chronic pain for which the cause may be unknown as well as the patient will also continually be thinking about suicide. He may do many suicidal attempts. Thus you have to be with him. You can't afford to leave him alone. Some one has to be there by his side constantly. It really creates a lot many problems for the patient as well as those who are close.
Bipolar depression results in disability, lost years of productivity and there is also much danger of committing suicide and, therefore, it is indeed very dangerous. In addition, bipolar depression can also be accompanied by symptoms of psychosis, which may be sensing things that are not there. Some of the beliefs will be believed with no adequate reason or evidence, are available and which cannot be explained by normal rational thought. Some patients of bipolar depression may have paranoia and feel monitored by an entity more powerful and this could be the government or an intimidating force. These things are really scary. It becomes important that this person needs medical supervision.
You must take him/her to a good psychiatrist. The person will be okay only after the medical assistance is taken for him/her. To alleviate depressive symptoms, there are medications available. There are certain drugs, which are to be taken with water and some, which are for chewing. Depending on your preference, your doctor will be able to prescribe the correct medication for your particular type of depression, whether mild or severe. But you must not rely on anyone's prescription. It must be only the doctor to tell you about the medicines. You must follow only the doctor's instructions in this case.
This is because there are many problems that the patient creates for the close one's. Also the person is more prone to commit suicide. This may create further problems.
