Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treatment

There is evidence that both pharmacological and non-pharmacological procedures, or a combination of these strategies are effective in the treatment of GAD. The pharmacological treatment of GAD includes benzodiazepines, azapirones and antidepressants.

Among psychotherapy, the cognitive-behavioural therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in GAD treatment. Although in some cases of subsyndromal anxiety one course of therapy might be sufficient, anxiety as a rule has a chronic course and repeat interventions will be required. In general, the treatment of GAD should be thought of as being intermittent.

However, in spite of hundreds of controlled studies on the therapy of current GAD, remarkably little is known about long-term drug treatment.
