In all the trials where phenelzine was used in one of the group, it came out as the most effective drug, even though not significantly so. However, there is less evidence based on controlled trials for MAOIs, both the classical irreversible and modern reversible inhibitors, than for TCAs and SSRIs. Their main mode of action may be on phobic anxiety.
