Freud , in his early psychoanalytic theory of anxiety, viewed anxiety of failure in defence mechanisms; in a successive theory he considered cause and trigger of defence mechanisms . More modern psychodynamic theories, as articulated by Shear et al. stress the contribution styles and early experiences to psychological vulnerability for anxiety.
