Overcoming Performance Anxiety

A very common sexual complaint is performance anxiety. Worrying about ones sexuality can deeply affect your self esteem as well as the relationship with your partner and performance anxiety commonly affects men.

Mental and Physical Stressors

The root of the problem in every case of anxiety should be determined. The battle is half won once the cause is figured out. You can then put all your concentration in one direction to plan anxiety relieving strategies.

Poor sexual performance can be triggered by physical stressors such as cold weather, physical exhaustion, large meals or heavy consumption of alcohol. If proper attention is given at the proper time then these factors can be reversible and sexual activity can be brought back to normal. An affected individual may also be on certain drugs that can have sexually related side effects such as interference with libido or erections.

It is difficult to control mental stressors. At one time a person can be worrying about several things such as bills, health, family affairs and work. If the patient feels like a failure and has low self esteem then it is often the cause of performance anxiety. A lot of time and patience is needed to overcome such problems. The only way to help such people is often therapy.

In helping performance anxiety the partner plays a very important role. Selfish, uncaring sexual partners will often worsen the situation. The first step in maintaining a strong relationship and getting the sexual life back on track is to understand the helplessness and loneliness of the patient.

Focusing on the problem and finding ways to eliminate the cause can help performance anxiety. Due to his poor sexual performance a patient often considers himself a lesser man. These people often avoid seeking help and are ashamed of themselves. There are several different categories of medications that can help depending on each individual situation. An alternative therapy that can be used is self hypnosis and it has been found to be very helpful in some cases.

In most cases performance anxiety is not a permanent dysfunction. Due to fear of not performing sexual activity should not be avoided. The anxiety should not be allowed to take over the daily routine like in all cases of anxiety and it shouldn't affect the likes and dislikes of the patient. A strong tool to help the patient regain confidence and enjoy a healthy sexual life is to have regular reassurance and compassion by the partner.
