The Problem of Social Anxiety

In the list of psychological problems throughout the world at present social anxiety is so common that it is believed to rank number three and in spite of such high prevalence it has not been fully understood yet.

Social anxiety has many different manifestations including a person feeling that people are constantly watching them when they are standing in line and even though they know the perceptions are not true, they can't shake off the feelings. Other people may be constantly agonized when seated by the telephone because they are in fear of picking up the phone and making a call. These cases are known as social anxieties and are common.

Social anxiety has at the bottom line an experience of fear, apprehension or being excessively worried about different social situations and how the individual is evaluated by others. Social anxiety has different instances in which it occurs under different circumstances and situations.

Where Can Social Anxiety Occur?

Social anxiety typically occurs with speaking in public as well as performing in public or even giving interviews. A person with social anxiety disorders is thought to be afflicted by a social phobia that is really a psychiatric anxiety disorder that includes extraordinary anxiety in addition to too much self consciousness in normal day-to-day social situations.

A person may also have a fear of being watched that is persistent, intense and even chronic. Others may feel embarrassed as well as humiliated by their own actions because they feel they are judged by others. Often times the trigger of social anxiety is some sort of social stimulus that can be either perceived or actual. For people suffering from social anxiety there is quite some difficulty in overcoming the feelings.

Certain situations such as feeling afraid of speaking in public or at formal and informal gatherings or eating or writing in front of other people and in its severest form may be so wide and all encompassing as to cause the patient to experience such symptoms constantly may be the effects of social anxiety.

For people suffering from social anxiety there is plenty of hope since there are many therapies, medications or combinations available for the treatment of patients. Researchers have found cognitive behavior therapy to be effective in treating social phobias.
