Pharmacotherapy for Social Phobia

There are three main goals of drug treatment. The first step in pharmacotherapy of SP is that of reducing and controlling pathological anxiety and related phobic avoidance of feared situations in the short term. Second, assuring adequate treatment of depression or other comorbid conditions is also an important issue. Third, as SP is a chronic condition, the choice of treatment which can be well tolerated over long periods will enhance compliance. Severe, generalised SP is a serious disorder that in many cases merits aggressive treatment (including pharmacological therapy) to prevent or reverse the significant disability which accompanies untreated SP.

An increasing number of drugs from different pharmacological classes are being evaluated in SP. The consensus panel considered the quality of clinical evidence for the effectiveness of current therapeutic options in social anxiety disorder: SSRIs, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and benzodiazepines. They show important differences in terms of tolerability, safety and side-effect profile.
